GED Language Arts Practice Test 3
Forty new multiple-choice questions: 22 in reading comprehension, 9 in writing and organization, and 9 in grammar and usage. Most reading questions come in sets of three or four tied to one longer passage, the way they appear on the real test. None of these questions appear in Practice Test 1 or 2.

“To: All warehouse staff From: Dana Whitfield, Operations Manager Re: Changes to near-miss reporting, effective March 3 Last quarter we recorded two injuries on the loading dock. Both happened in spots where workers had already noticed problems, a loose dock plate and a blind corner on the forklift route, but no one had filed a report. When I asked why, the most common answer was that the old paper form took too long and seemed to disappear once it was turned in. Starting March 3, near misses can be reported in two ways. You can scan the QR code posted at each time clock and complete a five-question form on your phone, or you can tell your shift lead, who will enter the report for you. Reports may be anonymous. Every report will receive a tracking number, and the safety committee will post the status of open reports on the break room board each Monday. I want to be clear about one point. No one will be disciplined for reporting a near miss, including one they were involved in. The goal is to fix hazards before they hurt someone, not to assign blame. Shift leads will review the new process at the start of each shift this week. Please direct questions to me or to any member of the safety committee.” What is the main purpose of this memo?
Why this test uses longer passages
Each reading passage runs about 150 to 300 words, and several questions draw on the same text. That means you read once and answer several times, so it pays to read the whole passage carefully before looking at the first question.
The mix follows the official test: about three quarters of the passages are informational, such as a workplace memo, a letter to a city department, a news article, and two speeches, and about one quarter are literary. One set pairs two short passages that argue opposite sides of the same issue, which is also the format of the Extended Response.
How to work through a paired passage set
Before answering, name each writer’s claim in a few words and note the strongest piece of evidence each one uses. Then look for where the passages actually meet: one writer may answer the other’s point directly, while the other ignores it.
Questions on paired passages often ask which argument is better supported or which writer addresses the opposing view. The answer depends on the evidence in the text, not on which side you personally agree with.
Frequently asked questions
- Does Practice Test 3 repeat any questions from the first two tests?
- No. Every question in this set is new and does not appear in Practice Test 1 or Practice Test 2.
- How should I use my score on this test?
- Scores report on the 100-200 GED scale, where 145 passes. Compare the result with your earlier tests and review the skill area where most of your errors fall.
